The Story
It all started way back in 2010, when Laszlo Hanyecz was able to make a deal with another early bitcoiner, Jerco, and got Jerco to buy him 2 pizzas from Papa John’s and get them delivered to Laszlo’s house, by paying with a credit card.
In return Laszlo would send him 10,000 BTC, then valued at around $40 dollars, which covered the price of the pizzas. As of writing, those 10,000 BTC are currently valued at a staggering $400,000,000 dollars. That’s why unless you earn 100% in bitcoin, it is a good practice to replace what you spend!
He initially posted the legendary offer on May 17th, 2010, and then made a follow-up post again on May 22nd, and reported that he had successfully made the first ever purchase with Bitcoin.
Recently Laszlo made Bitcoin economic history a second time when he ordered 2 more pizzas, this time with Bitcoin via Lightning Network.
Since then, it has become tradition among Bitcoiners to honor Laszlo and his historic first purchase in which Bitcoin transitioned from collectible to money, by meeting, ordering some Pizzas with Bitcoin and having conversations with their fellas.
As Bitcoiners from all over get together, the global celebration of Bitcoin Pizza Day really illustrates its role as the first native currency of the internet, and how truly borderless it really is.
